Tim Palmer (Individual Biography)
Jason started playing the piano at an early age, moving to drums and percussion in his teens. He earned a place to study percussion at the Birmingham Conservatoire, graduating with first class honours an advance postgraduate diploma with distinction and many of the college prizes and awards. During his time at the Conservatoire he performed extensively internally and externally and was a national semi-finalist in the BBC young musician of the year competition.
Jason now combines his activity in Maraca2 with a freelance career based in the midlands performing with many of the regions most established ensembles including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Comfortable in a wide range of styles and settings he has performed at many major UK festivals including the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Glastonbury Festival, Glasgow International Jazz Festival, Henley Festival of the Arts and Bloodstock Heavy Metal Festival. He has toured extensively around Europe with a variety of ensembles and has appeared on regional and national radio and TV including BRMB, Kerrang Radio and MTV.
As a busy educator Jason holds a variety of posts around the Midlands including visiting tutor of mallet percussion at Birmingham Conservatoire and visiting tutor of Drum Kit at Coventry University. He regularly enriches his teaching work with workshops with community led organisations working with children of all ages and backgrounds. He is also an examiner around the world for the Rockschool examination board and also has moderated for the Access to Music syllabus nationwide.
